CNN reporter calls Jeanine Pirro’s accusations that he is a ‘thug’ absurd

WASHINGTON – White House correspondent Jeff Zeleny says he thought that Fox News host Jeanine Pirro got it wrong during an interview she conducted with CNN’s Jim Acosta Sunday. In her interview with Acosta about his decision to announce his resignation following President Trump’s previous comments about the “rude” press he feels treat him unfairly, Pirro said that media “cannot wait to crucify” the president.

When Zeleny asked Acosta if that made him feel like a “persecutor,” Acosta said no. But he did say that he wished that he would be. “You hear somebody describe you as a persecutor and that does sting a little bit,” he said.

Pirro, when asked what happened during the interview that caused him to reach that conclusion, said, “I don’t know.” But the reporter replied that he thinks she was accusing him of being a “thug.”

After criticism of Pirro’s comments, she suggested that Acosta was angry because he didn’t get the interview he wanted. But Acosta responded by saying, “They put Jeanine in charge of the Sunday show.” And by the way, he added, “I didn’t do anything inappropriate.”

When asked if that tone was fair, Zeleny agreed that “there’s a way to ask a question … but it’s not the right place.” He added that he thinks the remark was taken out of context.

The protest, he said, was “extraordinary.” “It was a very peaceful protest. It was a show of solidarity with Jim Acosta.”

On Saturday, Acosta also tweeted that he would no longer hold press briefings, which had been a long-standing tradition.
