Must-Have Hotels in Budapest

TK

The 11-room independent hotel TK on Tisza Street, on the banks of the Danube, has three of the best alfresco spaces in Budapest. The foyer is adorned with handmade wood signs and an authentic chandelier, and the restaurant offers contemporary Hungarian food in an informal atmosphere. Find a spot on the roof of the guesthouse, or follow the city’s thriving nightlife to one of the city’s nightly techno and techno-electro bashes. On chilly nights, chill out at one of the more romantic settings in the city: the humid European Village hotel, located on the banks of the Danube and one of a collection of deco-style villas of the Cultural Gardens complex. On a clear day, the hotels’ verdant gardens offer a stunning view of the bridge spanning the Danube.

American Bridge Inn

With just nine rooms, American Bridge Inn offers a luxe, leafy location by the Vajdabau Bridge. Guests are invited to wander the garden to visit the Hungarian springhouse (Despitelovote Maciekanvach), a petite mansion in the middle of the park. With chaise lounges, stools and throws made from ceramics from the ’70s, it’s easy to relax after your late-night revelry. (440 Grand St.; American Bridge Inn; 228 rooms with one small inn room.)

Skema

Like the other Hotels of Budapest locations in the area, the boutique Skema Hotel provides travelers with a hip, modern vibe. Each room is special, with exposed brick and bed frames reminiscent of ’60s and ’70s posters, an espresso machine and an ancient, lacquered desk lamp. There’s also an on-site restaurant and a rooftop deck for sunset views of the city and pebbles at the bottom of the Dobrzak Lake. Don’t miss the roof terrace for views of the Buda Castle (79 N. Pest Street) or the Buda Hilton (1007 Putl 2 Cs.). (Skema Budapest, E: 33223; Room rates begin at $164).
